Patented approach to small-scale modular process plant design earns accolade for innovation in energy
HOUSTON – OCT. 27, 2025 – Global engineering firm Modular Plant Solutions (MPS) earned a Stevie Award for the Energy Industry Innovation of the Year for their patented modular process plant design based on the ISO-1496/CSC container standard, as part of the 23rd Annual American Business Awards.
The American Business Awards are the U.S.’s premier business awards program. Nicknamed the Stevies for the Greek word meaning “crowned,” the awards were presented to winners at a gala ceremony at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York earlier this year.
MPS, which specializes in process modularization, optimization and project implementation for the energy industry, earned the award for the team’s leadership in the energy sector with its innovative patented modular process plant design.
MPS is the only company that offers a patented modular process plant design based on the ISO-1496/CSC container standard. Their design goes beyond the ISO standard and accommodates vertically oriented or stacked containers, providing more flexibility to accommodate tall process structures that are essential for the energy industry.
More than 250 professionals worldwide participated in the judging process this year. Judges for the Energy Innovation category praised MPS’s engineering breakthrough, noting that “obtaining the patent for this modular plant design using modified ISO standards is a significant achievement, especially the innovation allowing vertical stacking.”
“We’re proud for MPS to be awarded with the Energy Industry Innovation of the Year,” said Russell Hillenburg, President & CEO and Co-Founder of MPS. “This honor reflects our entire team’s dedication and our commitment to solving real-world challenges with practical, forward-thinking solutions.”
With MPS’s design, plant modules can be transported by truck, container ship or rail and assembled on-site — making small-scale, regionalized energy production and process plants more cost-effective and accessible.
Judges highlighted the solution’s impact, saying, “it cleverly addresses the need for smaller, deployable process plants” and “sets a new standard for scalability and efficiency in the energy industry.”
MPS’s small-scale methanol plant, MeOH-To-Go®, employs this patented approach and was named the Best Gas Processing/LNG Technology by the Hydrocarbon Processing Awards in 2022.
“Organizations across the United States continue to demonstrate resilience and innovation,” said Stevie Awards president Maggie Miller. “The 2025 Stevie winners have helped drive that success through their innovation, persistence, and hard work. We congratulate all of the winners in the 2025 ABAs.”
